How Top Legal Performance Supplements Affect The Body

By Darryl Jones

Taking legal performance supplements is thought to improve athletic performance in a variety of ways. Many athletes are looking for a competitive edge that will help them to achieve more. However, caution must be used when taking any supplement.

Some athletes use diuretics for weight adjustment. Wrestlers and other athletes use diuretics to shed water weight, which allows them to lower their competitive weight class. Diuretics, however, may cause athletes to become dehydrated and may produce exhaustion, muscle cramps and dizziness. Serious side effects may include blood pressure drops, potassium deficiency and heart arrhythmias.

The popular supplement creatine is a substance naturally produced by the human body. Creatine helps the muscles to release energy more effectively by causing the muscles to produce higher amounts of adenosine triphosphate. Sprinters and weightlifters may experience more power, and all athletes may benefit from better post-workout recovery and improved muscle mass. Users should also know what creatine side effects include weight gain, diarrhea, nausea and muscle and stomach cramps. High doses may lead to kidney or liver damage.

Some athletes choose stimulants. Stimulants increase blood pressure and heart as well as activating the nervous system, improving endurance, suppressing appetite, reducing fatigue and increasing alertness. High doses may cause circulatory system problems, like heart palpitations, and may also cause nervousness and insomnia.

Chromium picolinate stimulates insulin activity within the body. Increased insulin activity helps with the breakdown of glucose and fats, which helps to keep the body leaner. Although research has not yet proven this claim, athletes believe that chromium picolinate may enhance protein synthesis to stimulate muscle growth. Side effects may include hypoglycemia as well as kidney and liver damage.

In most cases, the long-term effects of performance supplements have not been studied. Therefore, athletes who are considering taking these enhancers should talk to a physician about the potential benefits and drawbacks. Also, athletes should ensure that they do not take enhancers prohibited by sports organizations even if those enhancers are legal.
