Beyoncé dedicates 'When You Wish Upon a Star' to health workers in 'Disney Family Singalong' - USA TODAY

When you wish upon a star, maybe Beyoncé will show up.

Viewers enjoyed a surprise appearance by Queen Bey Thursday during "The Disney Family Singalong," an ABC special designed to provide spoonfuls of sugar – as in the "Mary Poppins" classic and a brighter mood –  during challenging coronavirus times.

The cavalcade of stars, many performing from their living rooms and kitchens, also featured Christina Aguilera, Ariana Grande, Josh Groban, Michael Bublé and Demi Lovato.

Scenes from classic Disney animated films provided colorful backdrops for many of the performances, which, obviously, had to be limited in production scope. Lyrics ran at the bottom of the screen, with a golden set of Mickey Mouse ears doing a follow-the-bouncing-ball imitation to help at-home singers.

Beyoncé, an unannounced addition, dedicated "When You Wish Upon a Star" from "Pinocchio" to "all of the health care workers who have been working tirelessly to keep us healthy and safe." After a sweetly aching performance, accompanied by piano, she offered words of encouragement: "Please hold on to your families tight. Please be safe. Don't give up hope. We're going to get through this. I promise. God bless you."

A highlight of the hour-long special, which was hosted by "American Idol" mainstay Ryan Seacrest and encouraged donations to Feeding America, was a group performance of the appropriately titled "High School Musical" anthem "We're All In This Together" that reunited Kenny Ortega, director of the 2006 hit musical, and stars Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman and Lucas Grabeel.

Zac Efron didn't take part in the performance, but he offered an introduction while "hunkered down in the middle of nowhere with patchy Wi-Fi," as Seacrest put it.

"Hi, everyone. I hope that you're safe and you're healthy and you're doing as well as possible during these unprecedented times," said Efron, who then introduced "some of my oldest friends and some new ones. I hope that you enjoy and remember: We are all in this together." 

After Ortega and the "High School" cast had their reunion, they were joined in their performance by stars of other Disney TV films and series, including Dove Cameron, Booboo Stewart, Sofia Carson of "Descendants;" Milo Manheim and Meg Donnelly from "Zombies;" and Joshua Bassett and Olivia Rodrigo from Disney+'s "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series." Raven-Symoné sang, too.

In another big collaboration, Tony Award winner James Monroe Iglehart and eight members of the Broadway company of "Aladdin" teamed on that show's "Friend Like Me." At one point, their nine-box arrangement looked like "The Brady Bunch" opening.

Aguilera added a homey touch, giving her dog a quick peck before singing "Can You Feel the Love Tonight." The dog seemed perfectly at peace resting next to the superstar singer. She blew a kiss to viewers at home when she finished.   

"When is the last time you got to sing along with Christina Aguilera?" asked Seacrest, who was accompanied by ceramic versions of Mrs. Potts and Chip from "Beauty and the Beast."

The at-home feel was evident in many of the performances, as Little Big Town, split into three groups, performed Julie Andrews' famous "A Spoonful of Sugar" in their various kitchens, with their children joining in.

"Dancing With the Stars" alum Derek Hough and his girlfriend, dancer Hayley Erbert, made the most of their confines, donning bright period costumes as they danced through the kitchen. Hough's sister, Julianne, called mid-performance, joining on a split screen in a sparkly blue dress.

Josh Groban, accompanied by children singing and dancing from remote locations, sang "You've Got a Friend in Me" from "Toy Story," while Donny Osmond made the most of the family theme, singing a popular "Mulan" song, "I'll Make a Man Out of You" with his grandchildren.

In another performance, Auliʻi Cravalho split-screened in sync with her animated title character from "Moana," performing "How Far I'll Go." Cravalho, singing from her home as animated Moana rode the waves in a boat, said the song, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, was appropriate for today with so many "feeling stuck where you are, but wanting more from life and dreaming about the future."

Grande, glamorously made up and wearing a purple shawl over a silver top, had the most professional-looking performance, a music-video level "I Won't Say I'm In Love" from "Hercules," "my No. 1 favorite Disney movie." At one point, the singer, appearing on multiple screens, provided her own backing harmony.

The show found creative ways to bring performers together, with "Beauty" composer Alan Menken and a framed split-screen of Josh Gad and Luke Evans above his piano, joining for "Gaston." 

Other songs included "Colors of the Wind" from "Pocahontas" (Tori Kelly);  "Let It Go" from "Frozen" (Amber Riley); and "I Wan'na Be Like You" from "The Jungle Book (Darren Criss). Criss cut multiple takes, playing guitar, providing percussion and singing. 

Bublé and Lovato went way back in the Disney catalog to close out the show with "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" from "Cinderella," as families posed with signs thanking doctors, nurses, police officers, teachers, truck drivers and other essential workers.

Dylan vs. Beyoncé: Quarantine Showdown - The New Republic

Two music titans—one old, one young—snuck out new songs in the past month. In headline form, the news is that Bob Dylan is writing songs about dying and Beyoncé is consolidating her credibility as a rapper. Upon longer listen, however, Dylan's "Murder Most Foul" turns out to be a sprawling reminiscence of twentieth-century culture, with him and JFK in the middle. Meanwhile, Beyoncé appears as a guest artist on a remix of Megan Thee Stallion's song "Savage" and reveals herself to be a fan of legendary Atlanta rap outfit Trillville.

The song is a rare reflection on Dylan's own life. "I'm going to Woodstock, it's the Aquarian Age / Then I'll go to Altamont and sit near the stage," he sings, before rhyming "let the good times roll" with "grassy knoll." Then the wheels really come off, and Dylan breaks down into a Rick-from-Casablanca list of demands to some invisible band:

That "strip club owner" was Jack Ruby, the guy who shot Lee Harvey Oswald while he was in police custody. These acts of violence, which Dylan seems to be naming as a kind of root trauma or influence for him, mix with the songs—"St. James Infirmary" et al—that built an alternative historical canon, this time of emotion. Of which is Dylan a star? It's a question that nags him as he roams the rich territory of time gone by, all while nearing the end of his own road. It's a sentimental piece, but then these are sentimental times.

In 2017, Sheldon Pierce wrote a great analysis of Beyoncé's early rap work stretching all the way back to the Destiny's Child predecessor Girl's Tyme and her recitative-rap in the 2001 movie Carmen. The rap alter ego she calls "B" has a distinctive style, flickering between staccato-clean enunciation and long swoops up and down her vocal range.

Her appearance on "Savage" is no disappointment. Beyoncé in swagger mode is intoxicating, and here she's badder than ever: "Can't argue with these lazy bitches," she raps, "I just raised my price." Her lighter voice decorates Megan's more solid tones, and the mixture is just right.

As sharp-eared Twitter users have also observed, "Savage" has more than a little flavor of Trillville's dirty classic "Some Cut," which comes out in Megan Thee Stallion's rhyming style but particularly in Beyoncé's ad libs. All of them are as clean as knives. Some are laugh-out-loud funny, like her tribute to getting dressed in the morning: "If you don't jump to put jeans on, baby, you don't feel my pain!" The Beyhive has probably thrilled the most to her line about OnlyFans, the site where users can stream their own homemade porn.

To each their own. Dylan is still making quite lovely music, which is encouraging news, but "Murder Most Foul" is written in the kind of past tense you use when you've got one foot already in the grave: Elegiac is the polite word. In contrast, Beyoncé's turn on "Savage" is a triple-hander of a good idea: She's raising money for a disaster organization based in Houston, lending her support to a worthy up-and-comer, and the song is catchy as all hell. God knows our isolated flesh-sacks need some enticement to move, and "Savage" is just that.

These are two very different transmissions from planet pop star, but they serve a welcome distraction for bored earthlings everywhere. Maybe a duet, next?

Beyonce: Coronavirus killing black people at alarming rate - Times of India

Singer Beyonce Knowles highlighted the deadly impact of coronavirus pandemic on African American communities during her stint inA 'One World: Together at Home' virtual concert, saying the virus is killing black people at an alarmingly high rate in the US.
Beyonce made a surprise appearance during the concert, and advocated for the communities most vulnerable to the deadly virus. She also expressed her gratitude for the medical professionals and essential workers, reports eonline.com.
"Tonight we celebrate true heroes, those who are making the ultimate sacrifice to keep us all safe, fed and healthy," she shared, adding: "To the doctors, the nurses and other health care workers who are away from their families taking care of ours we continue to pray for your safety. To those in the food industry, delivery workers, mail carriers and sanitation employees who are working so that we can be safe in our homes, we thank you for your self-less service."
The 38-year-old singer then highlighted the plight of African-American community, saying: "Black Americans belong to these parts of the workforce that don't have the luxury of working from home. And African-American communities at large have been severely affected. Those with pre-existing conditions are at higher risk."
"This virus is killing black people at an alarmingly high rate in America," added the Grammy Award-winning artist.
The singer continued: In a recent report from my home city of Houston, Texas, it showed that COVID-19 deaths within Houston city limits 57 per cent of fatal cases are African-Americans. Please protect yourselves. We are one family and we need you. We need your voices, your abilities and your strength all over this world. I know it's very hard, but please be patient, stay encouraged, keep the faith, stay positive and continue to pray for our heroes. God bless you."
