NYFW SS20: Jonathan Simkhai

Jonathan Simkhai - The Modern Woman

And here we are, my favourite runway of NYFW this season. Jonathan Simkhai blew me away with the beauty of the runway and each of the pieces that were shown. Jonathan Simkhai came to my attention when In The Frow started to wear some of the gorgeous skirts from the brand and ever since I've had the odd look at the brand on Net a Porter. I didn't think I would cover this brand during NYFW but the clothes were too gorgeous not to. When the first look was the outfit of my dreams, I knew I had to talk about it.

When I have been searching The Outnet for Jonathan Simkhai pieces I could potentially afford, the caption says that the brand designs for 'the modern woman,' and you certainly see that in this collection. For me, this seasons collection highlights women owning their sexuality.

Spring/Summer 2020

For the opening look I was enchanted by the delicate lace combined with the strength from the plunging neckline and structured shoulders of the blazer. It shows the juxtaposition of women, the need to be business minded and strong but whilst maintaining femininity. I just thought it was stunning, it was the shape of the outfit that appealed to me. The blazer is a little bit longer and the whole look has been paired with a cute pair of low heels. The only thing I don't like is the colour, it is a lime green but this in a black would be my dream outfit.

The whole collection is very lingerie inspired and I love a bit of lingerie, especially when it can be worn during the day as outerwear. Even if I am wearing lingerie under my clothes, there is something so empowering about the structure and the way a sexy piece of lingeire makes you feel. I could have the most hideous outfit on but if I've got some lingerie underneath, I feel unstoppable.

There are a lot of midi dresses which seems to be a theme already this season, but they aren't swamping, they are slim fit and sexy which is created through the use of lace and satin. In the picture above is the perfect example of this style, it is sort of a night dress look that women of the 50s would wear but now women are able to step out more than the 1950s and why not wear your best night gown to do it.

To match the femininity of the lighter materials, there is also a lighter, more pastel colour scheme. There is a lot of mint, lilac and peach, all in pastel tones but there is also a bit of lime green which is a bit more of a muted neon. This muted neon green seems to have been the fabric used for all of my favourite outfits during the Jonathan Simkhai show. The colour really is not for me and it is certainly not a colour I could pull off but I wish so much I could, just to be able to wear some of these gorgeous outfits.

As I said this a very lingerie inspired collection which automatically makes it a little bit sexy but there is also a lot of cutouts within the garments. Look 24 was another look I completely fell in love with. It had a very slinky, cut neckline which was contrasted with a thick velvet navy skirt. I loved the weight in the bottom of the dress and it certainly sticks to the rule of either showing legs or boobs. To be honest there are few looks I don't like in this collection and I have to say it was an unexpected delight.

Based on This Show, What Should You Add to Your S/S Wardrobe?

Nightwear is not longer for the Night. This is a concept I have lived by for years. All of my friends know that quite often if I arrive to see them in a t-shirt, I probably wore it to bed the night before. I think daywear and nightwear are interchangable and so does Jonathan Simkhai. Finally there is reasoning behind my madness, it is fashun darling.

Find My Power Blazer. I have been on the look out for a nice blazer that looks like the one in the first outfit but isn't in such a vibrant colour and I love the idea of wearing a mini lace skirt underneath. That first look has given me serious outfit envy and I need it in my life.

Don't be afraid to be Feminine. This runway shows that there is a correlation between femininity and strength within the modern woman. A lot of people won't have you believe that but there is. This is how a modern power woman should be dressing.

Gone is the Balloon Fit. Last season there seemed to be a theme of oversized jackets and dresses but this season we are back to the slim fit.
