Josie Maran BEARNAKED Wipes

The Story Behind
I am not someone who loves using wipes, but I bought this slightly before December last year, as part of my preparation for my year-end get-away. I featured this in my Simplified In-flight Skincare Routine.

I could have bought from any brand, Simple, Biore, etc, but I chose to buy Josie Maran because I like what the brand stands for - Luxury with a Conscience.

Aside from the Josie Maran Argan Colour Stick that I have reviewed and love, I had not have much luck with Josie Maran products. I have one of their quads, but that was a dud. So is this BEARNAKED wipes going to be good? Read on!

Josie Maran BEARNAKED Wipes

Available: Sephora. On the high side of affordable.

Volume: 30 wipes.

Star Properties: Support the polar bear conservation when you buy this. Surprisingly, these are made in Hollywood (that area) in USA.

Descriptions: As in photos below.

Luxury with a Conscience - this is what Josie Maran products stand for. These are supposed to be pure, toxin-free, fragrance-free, paraben-free, petrochemical-free, cruelty-free, natural, biodegradable, argan oil, made with love.

I really like this part of the brand because I have sensitive skin, and it seems like they have remove most of the possible allergens from their making.

Some claims.

Ingredients list:

Packaging
The pale baby pink packet with cute polar bears on it and the JOSIE MARAN brand printed in huge font is appealing. But I do prefer wipes that come in a box instead of packet.

In all, I still really am not a wipe person, and I find it a big waste of planet resources to use such wipey, plastic packagey things. Not taking the moral high-horse, but just saying that I do feel guilty using wipes, bear-conservation or not.

That said, good packaging. I think Josie Maran in general has very simple, but pretty, sophisticated yet gentle packaging.

Luxuriously Soft and Biodegradable
I must vouch that the wipe-tissue itself is biodegradable. Not that I have seen it rot, but it feels of real cotton, real natural material, not some sort of strange plastic fibres that you get with other wipes.

And it incredibly soft and yes, luxurious not nothing else. It feels like expensive winter scarves or clothes. The first time I felt one of these on my face, I was surprised.

But the point about biodegradable products is that you MUST throw it in the right place. And the sad thing about most waste disposal systems in most countries, is that they almost NEVER lead to a proper place. Basically, stuff that can't be burnt without poisoning the country will go to land burial site, and what can be burnt, will be burnt. Some places do use magnets to stick out the metals, and the metals get carefully processed and reused. Yet the point remains that if you throw a Josie Maran BEARNAKED wipe into a normal dustbin, it might go to burn, and that wastes resources.

What needs to be done about such biodegradable materials, is to simply bury it in the forest grounds. It is like throwing an orange peel onto the forest ground, the orange peel will return to nature naturally. In urban societies, this means, you have got to throw such a wipe into a dustbin that says biodegradable plastics or fibres, and HOPEFULLY, whoever the vendor is, has the means, and knows where to help you bury it.

(When Josie Maran says biodegradable, I reckon that does not include the plastic packaging. So please dispose of the packaging separately.)

Cleansing Effectiveness
Surprisingly, this does take off makeup. Honestly, it says nowhere on the package that this removes makeup. It only claims to be gentle enough for your face and eyes, and from that, I infer that this is meant for cleaning your face when it is dirty/oily after a day, like a normal facial cleanser.

So it is a big bonus that it actually removes makeup, and quite well in fact! I would give it 8/10 in terms of makeup removal, but 10/10 for cleaning my face normally.

Kind and Tender
This is what I have issue with. I cannot pinpoint what it is in the ingredients, but this wipe absolutely stings my eyes (a lot) and my face (a little).

Since the rest of the ingredients on lower on the list, and also look readable and natural, I am guessing it is the Hexadecyl Isononanoate that is the culprit.

I am not sure if it will sting people with other skin types, but I have sensitive skin, and if you have sensitive skin too, perhaps you want to skip this product.

30 Wipes
Eventually, I stopped using this wipe after about 7-8 sheets. I just couldn't take it anymore, and this packet that you see in the photos was left on the shelves for almost a year now. It is now dried to the point I can no longer use it to clean my face. The dried sheets feel a little oily, so I am guessing it is the Argan Oil. And this brings me to the point - that I think Josie Maran could do a smaller pack one, perhaps 15 wipes? If you use two a day, it would last a week, if you use one a day, it would last two weeks. This way, the wipes will not dry out, and people who buy to test will not waste so much, like I did.

The wipes are still really good quality, and I am going to use the leftover as tissue-paper-cum-cotton-pad, to put my current makeup remover, instead of using my regular cotton pads.

Fragrance
This claims to have no fragrance, and I find that true. But you can still smell an amazing smell that I think is from the argan oil.

It does reminds me of tea tree oil, but a lot less strong. If you hate tea tree oil, you may end up hating argan oil too.

Overall
I do like everything about this, especially the bonus point that it removes light makeup, but I can't use it because it stings my skin. I definitely remember the price being wallet-friendly for as many as 30 luxury quality wipes, that was the reason I decided to put my money on it. Affordable.

Rating: 4/5.
I think you will like it if you do not have sensitive skin. Great little packet of gift of luxury with a conscience too! For a friend that is a little more than normal this Christmas!
