Organizing Your Closet 101

Confession time!

Yes, I love clothes, shoes, accessories, styling, magazines....list goes on but I'm definitely not the most organized. My closet is similar to a war zone, lots going on everywhere, and a big mess that needs to be cleaned up.

Every season, I have a closet clean-up and wardrobe organization day. I get rid of old clothes (stuff that no longer fits, torn, or haven't worn for 1.5 years plus), re-organize and fold pants, scarves, and hang my blouses and coats.

Sparkle Lists' expert Tips to help you Organize your Closet:

Step 1: Get Rid Of Your Old Clothes.
  • If you haven't worn in the last 1-2 years. Toss or Donate it.
  • If its 2-3 sizes too small or too big, please get rid of it.
  • Shop for your closet, don't shop for storage.
Step 2: Get Help or Make Your Own Solutions.
  • Some of you may hire a professional to help organize your closet.
  • Many closet companies work with your budget, but the best next option are friends!
  • Shop at Container Store, TJ Max, etc to find your own storage solutions and items.
  • Slimline Hangers are the best to hang items and save room in your closet.

Step 3: Just Start.
Here are expert tips on organizing individual items and de-cluttering your closet:

Blouses & Tops
Hang as many you can and want. You will most likely wear if you can see it. (Less to iron!)

Sweaters
Fold sweaters to keep the shape. Organize  sweaters by color, style, or weight.Use cubbies or dividers to arrange them. Use a folding board to perfect the process.

Jeans
There are many ways to organize your jeans and denim however it all depends on your personal preference. Arrange them by brand, color, style, size. Some stylists suggest hanging them by the hem and organizing by dark to light denim.

Bottoms: Skirts, Pants, Shorts
Hang each of these items by using clips. Fold in the sides so the outside of the garment isn't indented by the clips. Your closet will look more clean and less crammed.

Dresses
Again, hang and arrange dresses based on your personal preference. Some ways include, by color, length, style (strapless to full-sleeve), season, etc.Stylists highly recommend removing your clothes, and especially dresses from dry cleaning or plastic garment bags. The chemicals and products from dry cleaning damage the fibers and fabric of your clothes.

Accessories: Bags, Hats, Scarves
Organize handbags by color, style, occasion, or shape. Use a hatbox to place your hats in and label them or stick pictures on top. For scarves, fold and arrange them by color or material.  Purchase closet fish-net hangers to organize your daily-wear scarves.

Shoes
Besides arranging them by color and style, place the right shoe toe out and left shoe heel out so you see the total picture. This will make planning what to wear much easier.

Undergarments and Lingerie
Very simple, organize by color, size, and type. You can rotate the style based on personal preference.

Jewelry
There are many ways to organize jewelry. You can use a built-in drawer in your dresser, or jewelry boxes. You can also use jewelry stands or table organizers.
